In this article I have briefly outlined what I believe to be the best three marketing tools available today for the average small business for ease of use and cost effectiveness.

I have personally used all of the techniques below and I have invested over $250,000 on advertising with just Google Adwords alone in the past 7 years. I have real world experience in each method outlined below and continue to use these three methods today.

Don’t think that advertising and websites are the only two ways to attract more business. You can market your small business in literally hundreds of ways, so it pays to know what they are and then eliminate the ones that won’t work, or that you can’t afford, up-front.

My Top Three Marketing Strategies for 2017

1.) Email: Today over 20 percent of online marketers say that their businesses primary revenue source is directly linked to email operations. Many small business owners overlook the importance of email list marketing and list management. According to Radicati email statistics report, in 2015, the number of emails sent and received per day total over 205 billion. This figure is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 3 percent over the next four years, reaching over 246 billion by the end of 2019. Email data lists can be very affordable to purchase and then can easily be uploaded into any web-based email marketing software for sending. An email database not only helps to promote new products, services or promotions for your company but it add value to your company each time your database grows.

2.) Google Adwords: I would say this is just as important as email communications with your customers. I could write an entire article on PPC (pay per click) advertising but I will keep it simple for this list. Keep your budgets low when you first start and track your return. Remember that a ton of clicks, even orders, does not always mean a “profitable” sale. Sometimes paying too much per-click can cost more than what getting rung through the till. Be sure you keep your cost in check and create a budget. Google ads can be effective no doubt, but it can only provide so much so find the perfect cost per click and stick with it. I like to create three ads at least, per ad group, then each week delete the poorest performer then create a new ad in its place maybe using some variation of your best performing ad. Do this for the first month or two and you can effectively create a great organic ad that performs amazing using Google analytics to help you hone in on your core audience

3.) Social Media: Social media is much like email marketing where you are able to continually grow your lists, in this case followers. With increasing popularity of social media, and the fact its free, it is no wonder that this has become the most used methods of business advertising among a large number of business corporations. The real truth is, if you want to get results using FB, or Twitter, you need to pay for ads. This has been a provable method for myself personally to gain sales, and get a decent return on my investment. I think twitter not allowing geo-targeting of promoted ads is a mistake. If you were going to pick one social media platform for your business I would recommend LinkedIn hands down. LinkedIn is by far the best time spent for any small business if you’re looking for free organic results. Social media provides the opportunity to easily and efficiently connect with your potential customer. All your efforts in social media marketing should be focused on reaching out to your customers and vice versa.
