10 Digital Marketing Trends That Should Influence Your 2016 Content Strategy | KoMarketing

I wrote a post six months ago highlighting ten marketing trends that should influence your content strategy. While it feels like that was published yesterday, we all know today’s digital marketing trends change with the blink of an eye, whether it’s due to a new channel, updates to search algorithms, or any other factors.

Today, I want to look back at the past six months (with help from our industry news section and GIFs) and showcase some of the latest trends I’ve come across that should have a direct impact on 2016 content marketing strategies.

Take these trends personally. Successful content marketers dig into as much data as possible to analyze what’s working (and what isn’t) and better understand their target audience.

1. DATA MANAGEMENT

Numbers behind this trend: An IBM report we covered earlier this month concluded that nearly half (47 percent) of “Torchbearer” CMOs said they were confident in managing today’s abundance of data. Just 27 percent of “Market Followers” said the same. Further, the expansion of marketing tools has created a need for talented data analysts as companies plan to use more digital channels in the near future.

Action content marketers should take: Take these trends personally. Successful content marketers dig into as much data as possible to analyze what’s working (and what isn’t) and better understand their target audience. If your company or team has recently invested in new technology, take it upon yourself to get comfortable with it. Doing so will enhance the quality of your work and show upper management that you’re ready to be a “torchbearing” content marketer.

Why Everything You Know About Marketing Is Obsolete | Inc.com

In the last few decades, marketing primarily involved utilizing the media, the internet, and email to engage with consumers.

“But it’s a different world today, when almost the worst thing that could happen to most people is losing a smartphone.”

That’s according to Christopher Dean, CEO of Swrve, a San Francisco-based startup that is seeing triple-digit revenue growth by helping clients including The Guardian, Conde Nast, Warner Brothers, and Microsoft engage with mobile consumers. Here’s what Dean says about what companies need to know about how marketing isn’t what it used to be.

1. Marketing is no longer public, it’s personal.

Unlike traditional marketing in public spaces such as billboards, magazines, and television, the smartphone is a highly personal space for the consumer, and requires an entirely different engagement mode, where people spend the majority of their time, needs to be tailored to the experience users expect when they engage with apps. In other words, however you’re trying to engage with consumers, it needs to be personal, immediate, relevant in real-time, and in-context. Plus, the entire experience needs to feel seamless and frictionless, which can be a challenge for digital marketers.

Google is rolling out a dramatic change that removes ads from the right side of its desktop search results, and places ads only at the top and/or bottom of the page. At the same time, the company says it may show an additional ad — four, not three — above the search results for what it calls “highly commercial queries.”

All of this represents the conclusion of a test that began all the way back in 2010, and has been tweaked over the years since then.

Search Engine Land readers particularly some outside the U.S. notified us late last year that they were seeing the top-only ads more frequently.
